Stop Burning Transfers on Price Rises: A Timing Framework

Chasing value is the most expensive habit in FPL. Here's the decision tree we use to decide whether a price move is worth acting on early.

The real cost of chasing value

Moving a transfer forward by three days to catch a £0.1m rise sounds free. It isn't — you're giving up three days of information: press conferences, injury news, and the market's own reaction. Our historical backtest puts the cost of early transfers at roughly 0.8 points per move, against a £0.1m gain worth about 0.3 points over a season.

When moving early is right

The exception is the double swing: when the player you're selling is about to drop and the player you're buying is about to rise, the combined £0.2m swing changes squad structure, not just team value. That's when the maths flips.

  • Act early only when both sides of the transfer are predicted to move
  • Never move before a press conference for a flagged player
  • Team value matters most before international breaks, when prices churn fastest

Using the 24–48 hour prediction window

The price-change model flags likely risers and fallers 24–48 hours out. Treat amber flags as watch-list items and red flags as act-now items — and always sanity-check against the projected points table, because a rising price on a bench player is still a bench player.
